Jim Elliot Christian High School has one impressive robotic team. They are currently beginning their 4th year of competition under the direction of instructor, Tom Bray and are looking forward to another great year!
Each team receives electronics and software at the beginning of the school year. In January, they have to go to sites where NASA does a satellite feed with further instructions. The teams have exactly six weeks to make their robots. Then, the robots are picked up and stored until the contest begins. This way, no team has more time than any other team. Students worked every day after school and every Saturday using their various talents to work on the robot.
JECHS robotics team enjoyed immediate success when, in their second year, when their robot overcame all the other robots at the Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. After winning the regional contest at the University of California, Davis, against 39 other teams from 11 states, the team headed to Atlanta for the national contest.
Two of JECHS class of 2006 graduates, Sara Hoh and Cody Milne said being on the team helped improve their skills in many areas and helped them get into the schools of their choice. Hoh is attending the U.S. Air Force Academy, while Milne is majoring in engineering at the University of the Pacific.
If you get a chance to attend a Robotics competition, it is well worth the time. It is a venue where our students are using their intelligence to have fun competition while learning invaluable skills. These young people are our engineers and computer developers of tomorrow. Elliot students have shared with local public high school students their skills in robotics.
