On March 5, 2009 a group of young ladies at Jim Elliot Christian HIgh School met together before the start of their school day to study and discuss the book “The Lies that Young Woman Believe and the Truth That Sets Them Free”. This meeting is known as Heartbreak and is an eight week Bible study to support the girls emotional and spiritual needs and to give them tools to productively grow through high school and beyond.
Sandy Huber, who has two children who are JECHS graduates (Meredith & Fritz) as well as a current junior – Leslie, began Heartbreak because she desired to serve God and support the young ladies at Elliot in a productive way. She shares the story that inspired her to take this step of faith -
“One afternoon, Mr. Lambdin, the School Chaplain, approached my eldest daughter Meredith, during Bible Class. He asked her if she would be willing to step outside with a fellow classmate who was having a rough time. As Meredith relates the story, she and this gal sat outside on the sidewalk with their feet in the gutter for about forty five minutes as this hurting girl shared her pain and feelings of helplessness. When Meredith came home that afternoon she approached me with the following observation. ‘Mom, people think that just because we go to a Christian school and we come from Christian families that we are all OK. People do not understand that we are hurt and broken and that some of our families are broken too.’ She added ‘Maybe Jim Elliot is the place that God wants you to serve Him.’”
“I responded to my daughter’s comments like one of our bummer baby lambs does here on the ranch when they see their bottle; I got all excited and felt an immediate peace as if God was saying “Yes, this is a good thing”
With that she began to set things in motion to begin this ministry. After meeting with the administration and putting the idea in front of the Board, the doors just continued to fly open with the support of the school and adult women who willingly agreed to serve in leadership. The first leadership team consisted of Jamie Howen, Miriam Dulmao, and Lisa Fairchild. Mrs. Howen continues to lead along with Mrs. Cox has has joined the team. There are also two student leaders – Kelsey Walters & Eliya Hooks who are both are past members of Heartbreak and expressed interest in teaming up with the leadership group, knowing that it would require extra time, homework and counseling on their part. They share a commitment to growing in their walk with the Lord and serving fellow students.

Sandy’s enthusiasm and excitement for this ministry is contagious. She shares her vision for this years group -
“It will be eight weeks of revelation. We will take a journey of opening our eyes to some of the dirty, destructive lies that Satan is using in this world to try and tear us down. Everyone on this planet struggles to identify what is the truth and what perhaps are the lies we have been fed. Lies that we believe to be true about ourselves, which cause us to feel guilty, depressed or any other number of responses. By this spring we will all know more about ourselves and our strengths and areas of weakness which God can help us address. Its work, but its good work. The hour goes by very fast. Sometimes I wish we could just have a slumber party every week. Or maybe just skip school that day so we could talk…Hey that’s a pretty clever idea…. ”
We at JECHS are grateful to have a myriad of parents, teachers, student leaders and other volunteers like Sandy Huber who want to make a difference in the lives of others and are willing to share their time and talent.
